Super-speed Internet satellite blasts off in Japan

Post by Ykjr on Sat Feb 23, 2008 9:42 pm

Japan launched a rocket Saturday carrying a satellite that will test new technology that promises to deliver "super high-speed Internet" service to homes and businesses around the world. The Associated Press said the satellite would offer speeds of up to 1.2 gigabytes per second.

    Full Story

I hope that the new technology works because I would love to have speeds of up to 1.2 gigabytes per scond. I wonder how much it would cost.

Currently in Ireland the Max internet speed you can expect is from a company called Smart Telecom and is an 8mb package.
Ive been following our countrys Efforts to play catch up with the rest of the world and was excited when plans were announced by our goverment that may see me connecting soon at 16mb with no price change.

All that excitment has now gone after reading your post. Can you imagine a 1.2 giga connection?
My god thats amazing - think of the possibiltys for xbox live.

wow 1.2 gig would be so awesome. I tested on speednet or whatever and have an internet speed of 18 mb p second right now. but if a 1.2 gig network is coming that would be amazing.

problem is though that the whole net must be using that network of 1.2 gig else its of no use because if a site has a very low uploadspeed while you have a far greater download speed1.2 gig nothing really happens, its only the speed they are uploading that you can download.

its connected so as long as all the websites aren's using this technology its of no use. same problem goes for xbox live

True, but if it is the case that this is aimed worldwide then i can imagine websites would switch over within 3 or 4 months of it going live.
Im sure Microsoft is also licking there lips watching this Laughing

Sounds good, I'm currently getting 20mbps download with 1mbps upload. If this happens then happy days, but I'm not holding my breath.
